Wound Care Program Recognized at Wilton Manors
Wilton Manors Health & Rehabilitation Center in Ft. Lauderdale, FL has earned the Vohra Center of Excellence for Wound Management Certification. When Vohra physician Dr. Gabriel Betancourt, D.O. started weekly wound rounds at this facility 15 months ago, he set the wheels in motion for the facility to earn this honor.
“I remember when I started here in April 2017, we had some very complicated large wounds to treat,” Betancourt said. “I sat down with Director of Nursing Patrizia Pesce and we came up with a plan. Over time, we improved the wound care program. We started having a lot of success. A lot of the complicated wounds were healing.”
“We are doing an amazing job in healing those very difficult wounds. Of course, we couldn’t have done that without Vohra and without Dr. Betancourt,” Pesce said. “Dr. Betancourt has been really instrumental in accomplishing this award. He’s one of those people you can really talk to and make him a part of the team. He communicates with the team very well. So, together we come up with a plan.”
Betancourt said, “We’ve had patients that have been admitted to this facility with multiple wounds, chronic wounds that have been going on for over a year. Once we start treating those wounds, we get them to heal. It might be a slow process, but the end result is we end up healing a lot of these wounds. It feels tremendously gratifying to see these wounds resolve and to be working with people who are such professionals and dedicated to wound care.”
In order to qualify for the Center of Excellence, the facility had to achieve a wound-related hospitalization rate of under one percent for a year, among other criteria.
Pesce adds, “It’s a great reward, because we work hard every day to make sure our patients are cared for. We have a great team at Wilton Manors. We have amazing wound care nurses. We have great C.N.A.’s. We have wound care seven days a week. We work hard every day to make sure we are providing excellent wound care. So, to finally be awarded with this certificate is a testament to the effort our team is making every day.”
“It’s been a real joy coming to this facility,” said Betancourt. “As you can tell, it’s like a family here. This recognition is well deserved.”
