Health Literacy Month: The Dedication of a Hero

Vohra Wound Physicians is the nation’s largest multi-specialty post-acute physician group due to our desire to provide the best care and education to our patients, nurses, physicians, and partnered facilities.

We sat with another Health Literacy Hero, Vice President of Business Development, Peter Winn to discuss the work he’s currently doing in partnership with skilled nursing facilities. Peter Winn has been a part of the Vohra family for over 13 years. He has helped grow and shape Vohra into the industry leader it is today. Continue reading to learn more about the incredible work Peter’s doing not only for Vohra, but also our partnered facilities.

How long have you been working at Vohra Wound Physicians?

I’ve been with Vohra Wound Physicians since October 2004.

How did you get started in the healthcare industry?

Initially I trained as a medical microbiologist at the Queens Medical Center at Nottingham University in England. I spent about a decade in the pharmaceutical industry teaching rep’s how to translate and decipher clinical trials, abstract results, methodology, conclusions, interpretations. Also, teaching anti-infectives and antibiotics science to medical representatives in the pharmaceutical world. Then I came and joined Vohra in 2004 initially as the marketing manager, then the director of operations, then the Chief Operations Officer. Building the infrastructure, carving out the key marketing messages for Vohra Wound Physicians and helping with the growth of Vorha. At the time it was just in South Florida. Then into New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Illinois.

What is Vohra doing to help improve health literacy and health education?

As a company, Vohra wound physicians is really trying to help with health literacy and better communication. That’s better communication to physicians in general. But also, to the nursing staff, physical therapy, dietary, and to patients, and patients’ family members.

As we round on a weekly basis, the physician works with the nursing staff. It’s a multi-specialty, interdisciplinary team approach where communication is key to improving healing and improving outcomes. We treat the rounds as grand rounds. Many physicians are used to that in medical school and in nursing school also. It’s a Q and A forum. We try to teach and communicate better wound management while we round. We try to treat the patients and their family members as a part of the team. We communicate to the patients and family members teaching them the merits of compliance, the merits of off-loading and nutrition and wound healing. Education is a key component of the Vohra Wound Physicians program to our facilities and our partners.

What upcoming events will you be attending?

Symposium of Advanced Wound Care

Las Vegas, NV

(Oct. 20-22)

69th Annual HCANJ Convention & Expo

(Oct. 24-25)

What are some of your hobbies?

Outside of spending time with my son and my daughter, I don’t really have a lot of time outside of work. If I squeeze in a moment, it’s playing the guitar, painting and playing rugby on Sundays.
