Teamwork Helps Margate Earn Vohra Center of Excellence Certification

Vohra Wound Physician Dr. Gabriel Betancourt, D.O. began performing weekly wound rounds at Margate Health and Rehabilitation Center in Margate, FL a year and a half ago. Since then, the facility’s wound care program has continued to develop. This week, Vohra Wound Physicians certified the facility as a Center of Excellence for Wound Management.

“Ever since I started working at this facility,” said Betancourt, “we’ve been working on this program, making it the best that it can be. It shows in everything this team does every day. I’m only here once a week. These people are here every single day, working hard on these patients. Making sure that their wounds heal and making sure they don’t develop new ones. So, a job well done. Everybody here has been very supportive. I’m very pleased with everybody’s efforts.”

Margate Administrator Sonja Jorgensen said, “Working with Vohra Wound Physicians has always been a key to our success in treating our residents who come in with wound care issues. I would like to congratulate the entire nursing team and also thank Dr. Betancourt for his hard work. Special congratulations to our wound care nurse Dawanna White. We’re very proud and very excited to receive this certification.”

Wound Care Nurse Dawanna White played a large role in the facility’s certification. White treats the residents with wound and skin issues daily. In addition, she also recently completed the Vohra Wound Care Nurse Certification Course to make sure the residents are getting the most up to date wound care.

“It was an interesting course and it was very helpful,” White said. “I use the things that I learned on the course and I apply it when I’m out on the floor.”

It’s the teamwork between Dr. Betancourt and the nursing team that has led to plenty of patient success stories.

“We had a success story just last week, said Margate Director of Nursing Bridgette Simpo. A patient had a venous wound for several years, but as of last week, it’s not resolved.”

“It was an excellent feeling to see this patient finally healed of their wound,” said White.

Dr. Betancourt also receives the clinical satisfaction from success stories such as this case. “Usually chronic venous wounds are very difficult to heal. But, we managed to achieve success with this particular patient. It was from the dedication of the team. Every day, the changing of the dressings, making sure the leg gets elevated, procedures like that. The wound healed very slowly, but eventually it did heal. So, it’s a testament to the good work of the wound care team.”
